Health Journalist Slams the Use of Smoking in Fashion Shoots

In an article for Shape magazine, journalist Kylie Gilbert slams the use of cigarettes in fashion shoots featuring some of the world’s most recognizable celebrity models.

A recent photo spread featuring reality stars and models Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid featured lit cigarettes in their hands. Using smoking as a prop has antagonized the writer who thinks that images like these encourage young women and girls to take up the nasty habit.

Glamorizing smoking is nothing new, but as people have become more health-conscious and the effects of smoking are now more widely known, the use of cigarettes in fashion shoots has become less common. These photographs may also subconsciously promote smoking as a way to keep thin. Gilbert says in her article that smoking is responsible for the deaths of more than 200,000 women in the U.S. each year, one of whom was her beloved grandmother who died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 2014.
