As with many chronic diseases, bronchiectasis and COPD are rarely obvious to others as they are unlikely to be present when a person is having a hard time breathing, or when they have to take medication. If they only see them in a work or social environment, then it may seem that there is nothing wrong when this is not true at all.

John explains how he has had to deal with people telling him he isn’t ill, just because they can’t actually see any physical problems. He talks about how frustrating it can be when people don’t believe his health struggles because from the outside he looks like a fit, healthy and strong man. John urges other COPD and bronchiectasis patients to focus on themselves and try to ignore others who may challenge their health status.

This video explains exactly how the lungs work and what happens when we breathe.
